EASTON AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY
SEPTEMBER 2003 NEWSLETTER
www.k3emd.com

Hello all EARS members. Our next meeting will be on September 16, 2003
at the Talbot 911 Center, 7 PM.

Peter, K3PKC will be talking about the up coming ham classes, and Marty, W3YOZ will be giving a short talk on the history of their Altoona ham radio club and how it has evolved over the years.

Peter K3PKC has taken the responsibility of running our ham classes, and on September 2nd we had a meeting of the people who are interested in putting on the classes. These included W3PAW, N3OUE, K3RUQ, K3PKC, K3OLE and W9GE. Peter has contacted the ARRL and we have decided to start the classes on 1-8-04 on Thursday nights at 7 PM. We have permission to use the Talbot 911 Center meeting room for a three month period. Peter would like to talk up and advertise the classes and invite any prospective hams to come to our EARS monthly meeting on 11-18-03. There they could meet the club members and be introduced to ham radio with a film from the ARRL.

We would like to welcome our newest member, Bob Finger, W9GE who has just moved to Easton to retire and “ham it up!” Bob is building a beautiful ham shack and putting up two Rohn 45 towers on his several acres of property. His new HF beam has a 40’ boom. Next he is putting up a 40 meter beam and an 80 meter 4 square vertical array. Below is a picture of Bob’s operating position.

R.A.C.E.S. NEWS

On September 9th Brett, KB3HGP conducted our first R.A.C.E.S. meeting for the Fall at the Talbot 911 Center. In attendance were KB3HGP, KB3HVE, N3OLE, KB3HYJ, K3RUQ, N3TFO and KB9MEJ. Brett went over the R.A.C.E.S. plan for Talbot County, and we discussed testing both simplex and repeater coverage from all the shelter locations in Talbot County. Put on your calendar that next month on October 14th, 2003 the R.A.C.E.S. meeting will be at 7:15 PM at the Talbot 911 Center right after the Tuesday night net, and you should bring your HT with 146.415 simplex programmed in it. Also bring any type of beam or 5/8 wave magnetic mount that you can use as an external antenna at the shelter you will be assigned to. We will each be assigned to a different shelter with our HTs and we will test coverage at different power levels and different antennas so we will know what will work in the future at each location. Please take a minute to take your yearly calendar, and mark the 2nd Tuesday of each month, so you will remember the R.A.C.E.S. meeting dates.
