JULY 2004 NEWSLETTER

Hello all EARS members and friends.  Our next meeting will be Tuesday, July 20th, 7 PM at the Talbot 911 Center.

The big news is what a great Field Day we had at Horn Point, Cambridge.  The weather was great, radio conditions could not have been better, the facilities were wonderful, and we had the largest turnout of hams we have ever had for Field Day.  We also had the most QSO’s of any Eastern Shore radio club, with a total of 1567.  We had 820 on cw and 747 on ssb.  We worked 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, 6 and  2 meters and had the most contacts on 40 meters.  Operators in our 2004 Field Day were: W9GE, WA3FAE, N3DUE, K3CB, K3RUQ, K3OLE, KB3HGP, N3OUE, K3PKC, KB3HYW, W3PAW, KB3HSJ and W3BFC.  Visitors and helpers were W3DMH, N5LKJ, KB3KWE, N3NUY, KB3KSP, W3YRS, KB3KXV, KB3KXF,  newsman Pete Macinta, our host Bill Boicourt, PhD, Melanie Koch, Skip Cousins, Jan Finger and Marsie Hawkinson.  W9GE made the most contacts, all on 40 cw.  KB3HGP was our all night man, KA3HYJ was our chef.  WA3FAE and N3DUE were our excellent operators from Baltimore who joined us for the second year, and had a big part in the planning of our Field Day set up and operations.  W3PAW was the main guy who put Field Day together for the third year and supplied the generators, towers, beam and lots of misc. items that we needed.  K3PKC and his wife KB3HYW were our husband and wife operating team.  John, K3OLE has done a great job on the score keeping and says our 2004 score is 5724 points with 1567 qso’s.   Last year in 2003 our score was 2614 with 687 qso’s. Our first EARS field day in many years was 2002, the year we had the hamfest and field day the same weekend and our 2002 score was 2850 with 1062 qso’s.

Field Day this year was a first for many of our new hams.  Bill, KB3HSJ was the only new ham that actually got on the air and operated in the contest.  Everyone else seemed happy to just watch what was going on. Hopefully, next year they will jump in and get their feet wet operating.

At this month’s meeting Peter, K3PKC would like to have a general discussion about the club’s educational activities and what we should do this

coming fall.  He would like ideas and opinions from recent students, new hams, old hams and instructors.

Brett, KB3HGP wants to remind us that our first RACES drill will be on September 14th at 7:15 PM at the Talbot 911 Center.  Please contact Brett if you are interested in getting started in emergency communications.

Our 147.045 repeater has been having a lot of annoying intermod the last few weeks from the State of Maryland’s 800 system.  As of 7-9-04 this has been fixed, and now the repeater is nice and quiet… You still need the 156.7 hz tone to access the repeater, but the output tone of the repeater has been changed to 107.2 hz.  If you have a home or mobile station that you are hearing an out of state repeater on our frequency, you can program in an extra channel in your rig and set 147.045 with a PL of 107.2 just for monitoring and this way you will not hear any other repeaters.  You will have to switch back to your original frequency in your rig where you have the 156.7 hz tone to use the repeater.

Our Tuesday night net at 7 PM is now being run by Brett, KB3HGP who has volunteered to be our net control.  We have been having a good number of hams check in the net, so please remember to join us each Tuesday night.
