EASTON AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY
JUNE 2003 NEWSLETTER

Hello all EARS members. Our next meeting will be on June 17, 2003 at 7 PM in the Talbot County 911 Center in Easton. Tinsley, K3RUQ will be giving a slide show on radio towers and antennas after the business meeting.

At our June meeting we will have the election of officers. We had no “new takers” come forward, so our old officers all agreed to run again for the 2003/2004 year period. For President, Bill, KB3HSJ, V.P., Paul, W3PAW, Secretary/Trustee, Tinsley, K3RUQ and for Treasurer, John, K3OLE. Both the Star Democrat and the Daily Banner will be at the meeting to take pictures, so we will get some media exposure.

The Eagleman Triathlon was held Sunday morning June 8, 2003 in Cambridge. Our club had a wonderful turnout of 14 members to provide the communication for the swim, run and bike race that covered a big part of Dorchester County. We used the 147.045 repeater for the first time, and with its new location in Trappe it covered all of Dorchester County using a 1 watt HT and a 5/8 wave mag mount antenna. Mike, N3OUE was in charge of organizing the communications this year. He had a meeting about 10 days before the race, and everyone knew where to report early on Sunday morning so there was no confusion. Ed, N3KVA spent the day being net control from his truck near the finish line, and did a great job. This was the first ham radio communication event for KB3HGP, KB3HYY, K3PKC and KB3HYW, and they all did just fine. The following is a list of the members who helped with the race:
KB3HVE, KB9MEJ, K3PKC, KB3HYW, KB3HSJ, KB3HYX, K3RUQ, KA3HYJ, N3OUE, KB3HYY, N3KVA, KB3HGP, N3TAF and W3PAW.

We have big plans for Field Day this year…John, K3OLE has found us a great location right on the banks of the Choptank River a few miles west of Cambridge. It is at the University of Maryland’s Horn Point facility. There is a pavilion with picnic tables, a nice outside bathroom; several barbecue grills and plenty of room for antennas, generators and equipment. Field Day will be the weekend of June 28 and 29th. Rough directions: Come across the Choptank River Bridge into Cambridge. At the 3 rd stoplight (beside WaWa) turn right. Go to the stop sign and turn right on Washington St, which is Rt 343. Go straight for about 3 miles, and watch for the green Horn Point sign. Go about one mile (you will pass the Cambridge Country Club) and turn right into Horn Point facility. Go straight to the end of the road and the Field Day pavilion will be on your right, down by the river. This year we will have a tower and a beam with several dipole antennas. We have all the equipment and generators lined up. Please come, even if you can only operate an hour or two. This year we will be using our new club call K3EMD, with extra class privileges.

Please bring back your EARS Communications magnetic signs to the June meeting, and I will keep them in one place until next year…Also, I have the Triathlon T shirts, and will pass them out at the meeting.
