EASTON AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY
DECEMBER 2003 NEWSLETTER

Merry Christmas! Our December meeting will be our annual Christmas dinner meeting on 12-16-03 at Suicide Bridge Restaurant near Secretary, MD. Dinner will be at 7 PM. We had our Christmas dinner last year at Suicide Bridge Restaurant and everyone was very pleased with it. We will be eating in the glass sun porch by the boat dock. They will offer a $9.99 special dinner, or you can order from the menu.

Our last month’s meeting on 11-18-03 was our introduction to amateur radio for prospective new hams. This was the largest meeting we have ever had with 28 people attending, including 12 new prospective hams.

Peter, K3PKC has done an excellent job of organizing the upcoming classes, and we all want to thank him for the time he has devoted to this end. At the meeting, Paul, W3PAW brought in a large amount of ham radio equipment from the 60’s to current times to show everyone. Paul talked about the evolution of equipment over the years and had a HF rig hooked to the beam at the 911 center for everyone to listen to. John, K3OLE talked about the fundamentals of propagation, DX, QSL cards and ARRL designations. John showed a tape of our Horn Point field day activities from June 2003. Mike, N3OUE talked about licensing and technician privileges. He also gave an overview of the 3 classes of licenses, and the requirements and operating privileges of each. Peter, K3PKC talked about the meaning of “being a ham” and then summed up our meeting followed by a question and answer session. As a result of this recruitment and training initiative we had 9 new technician students register for our ham classes beginning 1-8-04. Also, several of our EARS members are interested in upgrading from Technician to General, and learning Morse code.

Our 2004 dues are due on 1-1-04 and I have enclosed an envelope for your $30.00 check, payable to Easton Amateur Radio Society, Inc. John, K3OLE will pick up the checks from our PO box and deposit them, or you can bring your check to the Christmas meeting.
