EASTON AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY, INC OCTOBER 2004 NEWSLETTER Hello all EARS members. Our next meeting will be Tuesday October19th, 7PM at the Talbot 911 Center in Easton. The big news is our successful triathlon which was held last Saturday, October 9th in Cambridge. This was the longest triathlon ever held in this area, both in mileage and amount of time required to run the race. Our club supplied 18 members to provide communications around the race course which covered most of Dorchester County. The race was supposed to start with swimming from the Hyatt at 7 AM, but the fog was so dense that the start had to be postponed until 9 AM. This meant the race would last for 17 hours from 9AM until 2 AM, instead of 7AM until midnight. During the race, the club helped with two ambulance calls and provided communications from one end of the county to the other using the 147.045 repeater. The hams who helped with the race were: KB3HGP, N3OUE, K3RUQ, N3ZSV, KB3HYY, W3TMD, KB3HYX, KB3HSJ, WB3LFH and his daughter Katie, KB3KXK, W3PAW, W9GE, W3YRS, N3NVW, W3JAL, W3BFC, W3DMH, and K3OLE. Thanks to all. Some hams spent the whole day and didn’t quit until around 2 AM. They were: KB3HGP net control, N3OUE, W3DMH, N3NVW, W9GE, W3JAL, W3PAW, and K3RUQ. Brett, KB3HGP was the net control for the triathlon and did a wonderful job. He was on the race scene from 6:30 am Saturday until 2:30 am Sunday when the last runner finished. Michael Lees, KB3HYY took his sailboat out on the swim course first thing in the morning. Stephanie, KB3HYX came all the way from Fredrick to join us and traveled in the lead vehicle ahead of the race. Bob, N3ZSV got to ride in the helicopter! Mac, N3NVW won the award for the oldest ham and also stayed until after 2 am without a complaint. Both Jim, W3JAL and Dave, W3DMH got their feet wet in ham radio communications, and both did a great job. Mike, N3OUE was in charge of communications for the triathlon, and said, “Thanks to all who helped with this major project. You ALL made it successful. Your desire to be contributing members made this type of undertaking possible for us to do when other clubs wouldn’t even attempt it. I know it was a very long day, but you stayed to the completion of your commitment and beyond. Your dedication is commendable. Thanks again.” Brett, KB3HGP was the net control and did a wonderful job. Brett was on the race scene from 6:30AM Saturday until 2:30 AM when the last runner finished. We helped with two ambulance calls during the race and provided communications from one end of the county to the other using the 147.045 repeater. Our club will receive a check for $1000.00 for the race. This is by far the most money the club has every earned. Also we will all get a colorful triathlon T shirt when they are mailed to us. Under our RACES news, Brett, KB3HGP wants to report that this past Tuesday night, 10-12-04 we had our second RACES training of the fall and had 12 people turn out, six of which are not yet members. During the state-wide RACES drill we all received radiograms from MEMA. We covered procedures for sending situation reports (SITREPs) to MEMA and for sending/ receiving radiograms between stations. We also covered net control procedures (i.e. how to make contact with the receiving station). Please put on your calendar the second Tuesday of each month for RACES training. It is held at 7:15 PM at the 911 Center. Brett, KB3HGP has sent everyone an email to get an idea of what topics you would like to have covered at our EARS club meeting. Please be sure to read over the selections and let Brett know which you would be most interested in seeing presented at our monthly meetings. 73 Tinsley K3RUQ E.A.R.S.
