OCTOBER 2003 NEWSLETTER

Hello all EARS members. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, October 21st, 7 PM at the Talbot 911 Center.

The big news for this newsletter is hurricane Isabel. On Wednesday, August 17th Ed Mullikin, the Talbot County 911 director activated RACES. Brett, KB3HGP quickly got together several RACES members and set up communications at key Talbot County emergency shelter locations before the storm hit. This was good to have the stations set up and know that we could access the Easton repeater as well as test simplex communications. During the hurricane and high tide that followed, the shelters never did lose electricity and phone, so our communication efforts were not as vital as they could have been if conditions had gotten worse. This was a great experience for our new RACES group to deploy and set up our stations and antennas and I feel that we all learned a lot from the three days that RACES was activated. The following hams provided the RACES communications: KB3HGP, W3PAW, KB3HVE, KB9MEJ, K3PKC, N3UIF, KA3HYJ, K3OLE and K3RUQ. Many of these people stayed up more that 24 hours at a time manning their stations. Brett and Ed Mullikin did a fine job keeping everything running smoothly.

Peter, K3PKC is doing an excellent job being in charge of our new ham classes. During the last month he has contacted several radio stations and newspapers. Soon you will be hearing and seeing public service announcements that will tell about our up coming ham classes, and invite prospective new hams to our November EARS meeting. At the November meeting Peter is planning to have a welcome talk for the new hams that are interested in taking our classes. We will be showing some ARRL films and will have a few of our members share their fondest ham radio experiences.

Malcolm, K3KZ has sold his home in St Michaels and recently purchased a new home. His new mailing address is: 7316 Solitude Lane, St Michaels, MD 21163. Phone and email address is the same.

John K3OLE has converted to the high speed internet, and his new email address is: hawkjm@goeaston.net Please change this in your records.

See you Tuesday 10-21-03 at the EARS meeting.
