MAY 2005 NEWSLETTER

www.k3emd.com

Hello all EARS members.  Our next meeting will be Tuesday 7 PM, May 17, 2005 at the Talbot 911 Center.  This will be an important meeting.  We will be voting on the new by laws, and also for our new EARS officers for the period of June 2005 to June 2006.

Everyone should have received the proposed new by laws that were mailed out on May 7th, 2005 by Bob, W9GE.  Our current by laws state that if there is a change in the by laws,  each club member must receive a copy of the proposed changes in the mail 10 days before the next regularly scheduled club meeting.  There are many proposed changes to be voted on.  This is the first time in many years that the by laws have been updated.  The by laws committee, headed by Bob, W9GE should be commended on the work that they have done.

Gene, K3SVA volunteered at our April meeting to be in charge of the nominating committee for our election of officers at the May 2005 meeting.  If anyone  has not been contacted by Gene who is interested in running for a club office, please let it be known at the May meeting. We will be voting on all offices: President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, and Trustee.

Please put these dates on your June calendar:

June 12, 2005   Triathlon in Cambridge
June 21, 2005   June EARS meeting
June 24, 25, 26  Field Day at Horn Point, Cambridge

Our EARS hamfest was held on April 23, 2005 at the Talbot Ag Center.  We had the first ever poor weather day for an EARS Hamfest.  The weather affected the turnout, including club members,  we had about 100 people attending.  There was lots of under cover area, and all vendors and attendees made out fine.   We had the highest attendance of club members ever at the hamfest:  W3BFC, N3ZSV, KB3KXK, K2WC, W9GE, N3TAF, KB3HGP, K3OLE, N3OUE, W3GAC, WA3JAX, N3NVW, K3RUQ, K3SVA, K3KZ, W3TMD, WB3LFH, K9MBQ, W3PAW, K8JW, KB3HSJ and K3CB.

Paul, W3PAW was in charge of the hamfest and had everything set up perfectly. He had new signs made up that we can use for many years to come at our next hamfests.

John, K3OLE reported that we spent almost to the penny the same amount that we took in at the gate, so we pretty much broke even on the expense of the hamfest this year.

Allan, N5LKJ has made a new page on our www.k3emd.com web site under HAMFEST with pictures and details of our latest hamfest. Please check it out.

Peter, K3PKC is changing from sail to power for his new boat that he and Nancy will cruising on in the future.

Field Day will be next month in June and John, K3OLE is going to give us all a day and time we can go to Horn Point and look at the new proposed site for this year.

The new antenna for the 147.045 repeater has arrived which will  replace our existing antenna that we feel is defective.  Our present antenna on the Trappe tower works fine unless it is very windy which causes a lot of static on the received signals.  The new antenna is a Sinclair SD 214 SF 2P LDF.  It is a 20’ long, very heavy duty 4 dipole array.  The main 20’ pipe is made out of schedule 80 thick wall pipe.  It has 4 dipoles mounted ½ wave apart.  This antenna is a low intermod antenna with internal phasing harness and a DIN connector.  Our club is also working on the possibility of moving our antenna system and repeater to the new 340’ Easton MSP tower to provide better coverage for HT’s in Easton as well as to move the general coverage of the repeater 7 miles North of where it is now.  We have an application in with the MSP and will have to wait to hear if there is a possibility of us moving to their tower.  Everyone agrees that we should not install the new antenna until we find out if the 045 repeater will be moved from Trappe to Easton.

Hope to see everyone at our May 17th, 2005 meeting.
